Around 100 people converged on the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne for the launch of a campaign urging the town to stop using plastic bags.
The launch included a screening of the BBC film Message in the Waves, highlighting how discarded items of refuse such as plastic bags are having an impact on Hawaii's beaches and wildlife and urging everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Participants in Wimborne were also able to collect a free long-life cotton bag to use in place of plastic bags when they go shopping.
Further bags were handed out last Saturday between 1.30pm and 3.30pm in The Square, before the town's Christmas lights were switched on at 4pm.
There was also a pledge for people to sign, to show their support for using reusable bags.
District councillor Pat Hymers was inspired to bring the subject of plastic bags to the attention of Wimborne Minster Town Council after reading an item in the national press on the town of Modbury in Devon which has already gone plastic bag free.
She inspired Wimborne resident Boo Feltham and others to set up the group Reduce The Use.
Speaking after the screening, Mrs Feltham said: "It was great. We had a good turnout of people and lots of positive feedback."
